3 Unique Mirror Effects to Give Your Home More Personality

You probably don't think too much about mirrors. However, you can do so many things with mirrors that can help enhance your home's aesthetic appeal. One popular effect, for example, is using them to create space illusions to make rooms feel bigger than they really are.

However, let's take a moment to step away from such popular ideas and consider unique, non-traditional ways of creating effects with mirrors. Perhaps you'll fall in love with these ideas and incorporate them into your own home.

1. The Infinity Mirror

Imagine that you're looking into a mirror and what you see seems to go on and on — your image is reflected over and over as if it could never end. This design creates an illusion of an infinite you.

To create this effect, you take two mirrors of the same size and place them across from each other in a room — make sure you keep them parallel. You'll have to measure the placement dimensions to make sure that you're placing the mirror in the exact same place on one wall as you are the other.

As you look into one mirror, it will reflect off of the mirror behind you. You'll see yourself looking into the mirror and that image of you will be looking into a mirror as well. That pattern will go on seemingly forever.

To give the illusion even more effect, you can add a chandelier in the middle of the room. The light and beauty of the chandelier will reflect continuously.

2. A Coffee Table Illusion

You can create many different types of illusions using the infinity mirror concept discussed above. With a little bit of creativity, you can transition your coffee table into an infinity table that makes it look like LED lights are going on forever into the center of the table.

This effect gives the impression that you're looking into the inside of a box that is so deep that you can't see the bottom — when, in reality, the tabletop might only be an inch or two thick. This table would be the perfect addition to any entertainment room.

As you can tell, this is a bit more of a crafty project. Because you can use several methods to build an infinity table, research the type of table that you want to build in order to know which materials you'll need. However, the basic setup of this project is a coffee table with a glass top and enough space between the glass and the bottom of the tabletop for a mirror base and LED lights around the edge of it.

3. A Touch of Old World Charm

Are you attracted to rustic-looking things? If so, you can use mirrors to create a timeless appeal. Even if the mirror you're using is brand new, you'll be able to make it look like it once belonged to your great-great-great grandma in no time.

According to HGTV, the proper way to antique a mirror is to take it out of the frame and then apply the following steps:
  • Apply and remove paint stripper onto the back of the mirror.
  • Clean the back surface with a cotton rag.
  • Lightly spray muriatic acid around the edges of the backside of the mirror, then remove the acid.
  • Spray paint the back of the mirror gold.
After the paint is dry, place the mirror back into its frame. The acid should have made it so that there are parts of the mirror that aren't reflective. Instead, you'll see hints of gold which will make it look like a vintage mirror that has experienced some wear.

You can start using mirrors to bring unique effects to your home. If you're interested in getting mirrors for any of the above projects or would just like one to be used for traditional home design use, then call our team Pacific Glass & Mirror Inc. today.
